IRON HORSES - Dublin, CA
Iron Horses, 2023
Kevin Box Studio and Te Jui Fu
powder-coated fabricated corten steel
These monumental sculptures take origami to a new scale through the art of fabrication. Beginning with a folded paper model, the form is unfolded, and only the outer contours are traced, enlarged, and transferred onto sheet metal. Once cut and welded back together, the simplified shapes reassemble into a strikingly accurate version of the original fold—now rendered in steel.
Origami artist Te Jui Fu and metal sculptor Kevin Box decided that a horse would be the subject of their first collaboration. They created the paper original together and invented every fold from scratch. They chose the horse for its symbolism: a powerful, collaborative creature long represented in art, yet never through the lens of origami. While it may resemble a horse, the subject is actually a single square of paper—transformed. Our work was the first to use origami as both inspiration and aesthetic in fine art sculpture.
PUBLIC ART SUCCESS
It all starts with an idea—an artistic vision to create an image, a community to support the launch, and the strength to build.
At Box Studio, we have a team that collaborates seamlessly, capable of conceptualizing, constructing, and managing monumental sculptures from inception to reality.
It also requires a dedicated community on the other end—one that is willing to support, manage, and invest in the project. Box Studio extends its gratitude to Brookfield Residential Land for inviting this project to their development, located adjacent to the Iron Horse Trail.
And don’t forget laughter, good vibes, positive attitude…we’d be nowhere without it!
