“Collaboration is a key component in my process. Not only do I work with skilled technicians and engineers who help make the pieces in metal but I often begin my work in collaboration with some of the world’s most talented paper folders known as origami artists.” - Kevin Box

KEVIN & JENNIFER BOX
KEVIN BOX graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and now resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His background as an art foundry production manager enabled him to pioneer a unique process that transforms delicate paper into museum quality metals. From the beginning of Box’s career he received recognition from other artists and collectors alike with his unique and refreshing style. In 2004 he was elected as the youngest member of the National Sculptors Guild and was recognized by Southwest Art Magazine as one of the top 21 artists under 31 in the southwest. Over the years he has perfected his unique approach and applied it to complex design collaborations with world renowned origami masters. Kevin and his wife Jennifer Box, created OrigamiintheGarden in 2013, the first exhibition opened at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden in 2014 and the exhibition has been inspiring Botanical Gardens throughout the United States ever since.
JENNIFER BOX started dancing at the age of five. She trained under the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater then received her Bachelor and Masters Degree from New York University in Dance Education and Nonprofit Administration. During her years as a Modern and West African dancer in New York City she performed, choreographed and created some of her own costuming. In 2006 Jennifer married Kevin Box in Santa Fe, New Mexico and soon they began working together. In 2013 Jennifer and Kevin created the exhibition “Origami in the Garden” and many of the artworks within it. Their first collaboration was “Isadora’s Dress” inspired by Jennifers long passion for dance.
ORIGAMI COLLABORATORS
Beth Johnson is an origami artist from Ann Arbor, Michigan. She has been folding paper for many years, and began designing her own models in 2010. A self-taught origami designer, her work reflects her feelings of awe and wonder towards the natural world.
She is often recognized for her expressive minimalist style, and for her explorations of tessellations as textural elements in more representational pieces. She has been a guest of honor at numerous origami conventions worldwide, and received the 2011 Florence Temko Award from Origami USA in recognition of her work.
Beth has a background in Anthropology and Natural Resources and worked for several years on environmental issues. She left her career in 2010 to pursue more creative work, and now works full time as an origami artist. She divides her time between teaching, designing, exhibiting and diagramming, and also does volunteer work teaching art and origami in her community. She is currently working on a book with instructions for her designs.
Te Jui Fu graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with degrees in marketing, Graphic Design and Fine art. Throughout his career he has been an art gallery curator, director, associate and owner. Te Jui Fu’s origami pieces are part of numerous museum collections around the country. His work has been featured in origami magazines, and he starred in the documentary “Folding Largest Origami Dragon in the World“ which premiered in 2009.
Michael G. LaFosse has been working for over forty years as an origami artist, papermaker and author. Trained as a biologist, he finds his strongest inspiration in the natural world preferring to study his subjects in their natural habitats. He credits the work of the late Japanese Origami Grand Master, Akira Yoshizawa, for leading the way by exploring nature and achieving creative expression in origami art.
In 1996, Michael and Richard Alexander co-founded the Origamido Studio, a teaching center, gallery and origami design studio where they author publications of their original origami sculptures and make custom, handmade paper for each new creation.
Their works have graced museums worldwide, including: Carrousel du Louvre in Paris; the Arizona–Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona; Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, Florida; Hangar 7 (Red Bull) in Salzburg, Austria; Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts; Mingei Museum in San Diego, California; and at their own, Origami Do Experience—Waikiki.
Current, traveling exhibitions include Origami in the Garden. Together, they have authored over 70 books and kits about origami and paper arts.
Robert J. Lang is recognized as one of the foremost origami artists in the world as well as a pioneer in computational origami and the development of formal design algorithms for folding. With a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Caltech, he has, during the course of work at NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Spectra Diode Laboratories, and JDS Uniphase, authored or co-authored over 100 papers and 50 patents in lasers and optoelectronics as well as authoring, co-authoring, or editing 14 books and a CD-ROM on origami. He is a full-time artist, lecturer and consultant on origami and its applications to engineering problems but keeps his toes in the world of lasers, most recently as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics from 2007–2010. He received Caltech’s highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award, in 2009 and was elected a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2013. Roberts TED Talk “Flapping Birds and Space Telescopes” has been viewed over 2 million times.
