In his latest series, the Cape Collection, artist Kevin Box assembles reclaimed objects gathered from antique shops across the country into sculptures steeped in the language of the sea. Anchors and ship's wheels, pulleys and calipers, navigational instruments, weathered glass bottles like those set adrift with messages inside, and small glass houses all find their place alongside river rocks and beach stones, each assemblage crowned with a cast stainless steel or bronze origami crane or boat. Some rise as cairns, the stacked stones travelers have long raised to mark a passage; others gather like the contents of a mariner's world, each object carrying its own quiet history.

Box is well known for his ability to capture the delicate nature of folded paper in museum-quality metal through the lost-wax process. Here he brings that signature style to a distinctly nautical theme, inspired by time spent along the New England coast and, in particular, Cape Cod. Each piece marks a place and time in the artist's own experience, offered in the hope of stirring viewers' memories of their own coastal moments, of harbors, tides, and journeys taken and imagined.

Over the past two years, Box has chosen each object for its shape, its quiet suggestion of meaning, and its ability to endure through time and salt water, as the finest maritime objects are made to do. While he would normally cast an entire image in bronze to create a limited edition, and a select few of these new works are destined for that path, most have been made as one-of-a-kind sculptures, singular pieces for collectors.

The Cape Collection is on view at On Center Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Meet the artist at the opening on August 14th; the works will remain on display through the summer season.
