A caterpillar's sole purpose is to eat and grow, consuming as much as many times its body weight each day. This insight came to Kevin Box in 2016 while he was meditating on the phrase "Consider the caterpillar."
Box saw a parallel between the caterpillar's endless appetite and humanity's rapid expansion since the early 1900s. "The caterpillar is the archetypal symbol of our time," he reflected, an image of our belief in limitless growth.
Yet the caterpillar is only the beginning. This stage of ravenous consumption is not the end of the story but the first step in a remarkable transformation. Ahead lies the stillness of the chrysalis, a quiet, necessary pause, and beyond it, the emergence of the butterfly. In the caterpillar, Box invites us to recognize where we are, and to imagine what we might yet become.
